    In everyday language, the term "lock" is polysemous and can, in particular, refer to an "obstacle that prevents the progress of an action" (Larousse dictionary). In research and development, this is the meaning to be retained: a lock is an obstacle to achieving the objectives of an R&D programme. It can be scientific or technological in nature.
