What are the ECTS credits?

Grenoble INP - Ensimag, UGA uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
ECTS is a tool of the European Higher Education Area designed to improve the transparency of academic programmes. It facilitates student mobility between countries by allowing recognition of degrees and periods of study abroad. The ECTS thus contributes to greater flexibility and comparability of study programmes across Europe.

How does the ECTS work?
ECTS credits reflect clearly defined learning outcomes and the workload required to achieve them.
  • A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS credits (1 semester = 30 ECTS credits)
  • A period of study is made up of several teaching units
  • A teaching unit contains several types of courses
  • Each course includes an assessment, graded between 0 (minimum) and 20 (maximum).
  • In engineering programmes, the student passes the year if they obtain a mark of 10/20 or higher in each teaching unit.
  • A mark of 20 represents an “ideal” exam result, but the best performances are generally around 16/20.
  • Each unit is assigned a grade in accordance with the European ECTS standard: A, B, C, D, E, F, FX
As a result of the highly selective recruitment process at Grenoble INP- UGA, as at all "Grandes Écoles", our students are all among the top 10% of French baccalaureate holders. This should be taken into account when analysing the exchange student’s results in relation to their peers, which forms the basis of the ECTS grade.
