Structural weight saving is one of the option to reduce energy consumption of materials. Architecture design of multimaterials can take place at various scales and offers new possibilities.
To reach new objectives such as buildings “zero energy”, innovations in terms of insulation and transient energy storage are necessary.
It requires technological breakthrough directly related to the development of new multifunctional materials.
The multifunction required by clean energy sources i.e. electrochemical activity, electronic/ionic mobility, mechanical strength, durability, depends on the optimization of each elementary process and material and on the design of multimaterial, multifunctional structures and interfaces. Inputs of multi-scale characterizations and theoretical calculations will allow designing new materials and system design.
This cross-disciplinary field is addressed thanks to the presence of a team of biologists in the LABEX.
The programme focusses on the bio-functionalization of material surfaces, using polyelectrolyte multilayer films and biomimetic membranes as multi-functional tools.
