The objective of this module (4 lab sessions + 1 project on WiFi system design) is to investigate on optical and wireless communication systems design from a practical point of view.
The purpose of the WiFi system design is to simulate a WiFi transmitter/receiver, in order to understand the main issues for wireless system design, and their consequence on the system performances.
Lab session on Direct modulation of laser diode: to undestand chirp effect on the optical spectrum.
Lab session on optical amplification: practical approach to understand optical amplifier operating modes.
Lab session on digital modulation for optical systems: to test multimode and singlemode fiber transmissions and related performance.
Lab session on RF devices for wireless systems: understand the main specifications of RF devices to build wireless systems.
Prerequisites:
Basics: microwaves, digital electronics, optics, digital communications.
The exam is given in english only
4 lab reports (to return one week after the lab session) + 1 report on the wireless system design.
Evaluation:
average mark for the lab reports (to return one week after the lab session) = LR
mark for the wireless system design report = WR
Final mark= (LR+WR)/2
