Goal(s)
The objective of this module is to provide an overview of the various disciplines related to communication networks, with:
- an introduction to the fundamentals of digital communications at the core of Internet technologies (Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, Internet of Things, fiber optics);
- performance evaluation of network solutions using a range of tools (mathematical models and simulators);
- a deeper study of the “Networks and Security” module (3MMRS1) through
- the study of application-layer protocols such as Mail and DHCP, and link-layer protocols (PPP, Aloha/CSMA/CD);
- an overview of cybersecurity issues related to networking;
- and practical application of these concepts through real-world lab exercises;
At the end of the module, the student will be able to:
- identify the main mechanisms of digital transmission and their limitations;
- evaluate the basic performance of a communication system or protocol;
- better understand the layered TCP/IP architecture through the study of Layer 2 protocols and application-layer protocols, as well as the basic concepts of cybersecurity. This serves as a useful complement before the second-year course “Internet Principles”, which will fully demystify all mechanisms of the TCP/IP stack.
