Responsible(s)

Clement PERNET, Olivier ALPHAND, Martin HEUSSE

Content(s)

Network section:

  • Internet structure, universal network, public address allocation
  • Point-to-point link routing
  • Layered architecture: ports, addresses
  • DNS (and the concept of caching), data and infrastructure structuring
  • Concept of URLs
  • Description of protocols using state machines
  • Performance: frame size, M/M/1 queueing model

Security section:

  • Awareness of secure exchanges and data protection
    Basics of cryptography
  • Password security
  • Authentication and key exchange protocols, security properties
  • Authentication/confidentiality/integrity applications in traditional domains: secure email (pgp), browser (certificate, cookie), cloud

3 network practicals: traffic capture, DNS, HTTP;
3 security practicals: secure communication + authentication protocol verification.

*Detailed content (network section)*

-CM1: Internet structure + layered architecture

    • Internet structure: Edge vs. Core, ISP hierarchy, packet switching, transmission and propagation, demo (Ping, Traceroute)
    • Layered architecture: Example of web page loading + segmentation + loss/retransmission, encapsulation, TCP/IP stack
      -CM2: Protocols
    • Protocols: format, order, actions
    • UDP, TCP connection
      -CM3: Layer 3 “Network”
    • IPv4 addressing: hierarchical (subnet) + public address allocation (IANA)
    • Relaying/Routing
