Goal(s)

The goal of Fablab & IoT (Embedded Robotics) projects is to create "objects" incorporating computing power and interacting within a real-world environment. These projects are designed and built using a Fablab (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fab_lab).

Depending on the project's scope, Fablab projects can be completed over 1, 2, or 3 semesters. Modules 4MMFAB1, 4MMFAB2, and 5MMFAB3 can be taken in any order.

Whenever possible, students participating in the fablab module are encouraged to take part in competitions such as robotics cups, micromouse competitions, autonomous car races, etc.

Examples of projects can be found here: https://gitlab.ensimag.fr/fablab-ensimag-phelma-organisation-archives

Grenoble INP and UGA have their own Fablabs on campus: https://fabmastic.imag.fr/ and also at Minatec Phelma.

Ensimag Fablab projects are managed here:

Content(s)

Computer science interacting with an environment, and robotics in general, is very different from "classic" computing where data is processed and files are produced. In a robot, programs consult various sensors (camera, position, speed, temperature, pressure, etc.) and continuously perform actions (motor, direction control, sound, etc.).

IoT devices, such as sensors connected to a network, fall into this category because they continuously sample information about their environment and communicate their data by interacting with a complex network.

These objects, known as cyber-physical devices, are typically the systems found in satellites, flight computers for airplanes, helicopters, drones, autonomous robots of all kinds, household appliances, home automation systems, etc.

80% of the processor market is for such devices!

Content

From a technical standpoint, Fablab projects provide an opportunity to become familiar with:

Microcontroller programming, sensor and actuator management
Real-time processing and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
Real-time processing and related theory (signal and image processing, computer vision, AI)
IoT communication

Projects are carried out independently by groups of 4 to 5 students. With their supervisor, students:
Propose realistic specifications for the duration of the project
Specify the overall architecture of the solution
Develop the code and build the mechanical components
Skills

RNCP40117BC01 - Develop digital tools adapted to the professional context: proficiency

RNCP40117BC03 - Manage projects in the fields of computer science and applied mathematics within professional teams: proficiency

RNCP40117BC04 - Design, develop, and administer information systems: proficiency

Prerequisites

None

Test

Evaluation : 20% of Participation et assiduité and 80% of Projet (rendu du code et des résultats) + rapport écrit + soutenance (Soutenance 30 mn)

N1= Attendance + Oral defense + Delivery
N1= 0.2 x CC1 + 0.8 x ET1
N2= N1 (no retake exam)

The project is a team project and each student demonstrate its contribution during the Oral defense

Warning: because of the schedule, there is no retake of the project
As a team work, dysfunctional teams and unbalanced contributions may be penalyzed.
