Goal(s)

This course introduces the fundamentals of biology to students majoring in mathematics and computer science. The central concepts of molecular genetics and population biology (ecology and evolution) are presented in a computational format and explored using mathematical tools (differential equations, probability, and statistics) or simulations. The core algorithms and tools of bioinformatics are also introduced, enabling students to become operational in bioinformatics.

Responsible(s)

Clovis GALIEZ, Antoine FRENOY

Content(s)

  • "Sequence - structure - function" paradigm, and modern applications, such as identifying relevant genetic variants in large datasets or structure prediction; *Clovis Galiez, 12h*
  • Algorithms and standard tools for sequence alignment and sequence search : dynamic programming (Smith-Waterman and Needleman-Wunsch) + k-mer, discovery of classical software implementing such algorithms (Clustal, MAFFT, blast); *Clovis Galiez, 12h*
  • Deterministic, mecanistic modeling: biochemical reactions, ODE; *Antoine Frenoy, 8h*
  • Basics of population biology: demographics, selection, mutations, associated stochastic modeling; *Antoine Frenoy, 16h*
