Goal(s)

Following the first-year course “Networks and Security” (3MMRS1), which introduced the concepts of the layered TCP/IP architecture — in particular the Application layer (DNS, HTTP) and some elements of the Network layer (addressing) — this course aims to fully demystify the TCP/IP stack by providing an in-depth study of all layers from Layer 2 (Data Link) to Layer 4 (Transport). Practical lab sessions will provide hands-on experience, and finally a mini-project will allow students to implement an application-layer protocol and validate its correct operation by interoperating with existing clients.

Content(s)

  • Data Link Layer: Ethernet, CSMA/CD, Switch/Hub, VLAN, ...
  • Network Layer:
    -- IPv4: addressing, packet forwarding, IPv4 features, ICMP, ...
    -- IPv6: addressing, autoconfiguration, neighbor discovery, ICMPv6
-- Distance-vector routing protocols: RIP, Autonomous Systems
  • Transport Layer:
-- Stop&Wait/Go-Back-N/Selective Repeat: reliable transport, flow control, sliding window, ...
    -- TCP: features, congestion control
    -- UDP, NAT, Sockets
  • Practical Labs
    -- IPv4, ARP, VLAN, IPv6
    -- RIP/VLAN, IPv6
-- PPP, Proxy ARP, IP Tunneling
-- TCP/UDP transport protocols, socklab + performance evaluation
    -- NAT, Firewall
  • Mini-project: Client/server application programming using sockets (mDNS (local DNS), BitTorrent client, ...)
