Goal(s)
- Being aware of how AI (in particular gen AI) systems work
- Knowing how to do a quantitative analysis (typically: LCA) of environmental impacts of an AI system and evaluate the limits of such an analysis
- Understanding the dependencies of these systems to materials, water, energy, and labour
- Building an informed opinion on whether AI can exist in the doughnut Safe and Just Space for Humanity [Raworth, 2017]
Responsible(s)
Sylvain BOUVERET
Content(s)
The course comprises both a substantial technical component (necessary for understanding how systems work and applying this knowledge to a development project) and a component covering the humanities and social sciences.
- Artificial Intelligence 101: an introduction to neural network learning algorithms and their application to a development project
- The physical aspects of AI and associated impacts. Application of life cycle assessment and analysis to Artificial Intelligence
- Direct impacts and social consequences of the life cycle of AI systems
- Dependencies of AI to materials, resources, data and humans. Viewpoint of Science and Technological Studies on these dependencies.
- Introduction to algorithmics and programming (L3)
- Initiation to social sciences (typically ICT and society)
- Basic knowledge on environmental crises (climate / planetary boundaries)
- Basic understanding of social and environmental issues
- Without being a formal prerequisite, choosing the cours on Environmental Impacts of ICT (of the same speciality) can be a plus.
Test
Evaluation : 40% of TP notés and 60% of Examen écrit (2h)
