Goal(s)

This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental principles of geometric modelling, with a focus on the parametric representation of curves. It explores Bézier curves and B-splines in detail, which are essential tools in computer-aided design (CAD) and for the smooth representation of data. Students will learn to apply techniques of geometric design, interpolation and approximation to create and refine complex shapes. These methods have major applications in a variety of fields such as engineering, 3D animation, virtual reality, industrial design, prototyping and 3D printing.

A major group project provides an opportunity to apply the algorithms covered in class.

(1) Basic concepts of AFFINE GEOMETRY and DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY
(2) CURVES IN GEOMETRIC DESIGN
(3) SURFACES IN GEOMETRIC DESIGN
(4) INTERPOLATION and SPLINE APPROXIMATION
(5) APPLICATIONS: - Freeform editors (Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, etc.) - Robotics - 2D animation - Design from sketches and 3D sketching - Shape reconstruction

Prerequisites

Polynomial interpolation, basic concepts of linear algebra.
For the project, you are free to choose your own programming language.
